About RASAG

By Katelyn,

Formed at Learn For Life Enterprise, London Rd, Sheffield S2 1NF in March 2010, the idea of forming a community group developed from a long standing ESOL class which had a huge and transient membership with a variety of talents and experiences but who were excluded from society for one reason or another.   Sheffield City Council had declared a “Summer of Sanctuary” and it seemed unfair that tens of people using the learning centre daily had no idea about the cultural activities on offer, much less the ones they themselves could put on if they had a constituted group with all its trappings, which is obviously not that easy to achieve.

We did achieve it though, eventually!  The first project Legends was our Summer of Sanctuary 2010 offering.  We held events and did catering of wholesome food from around the world at many events in Sheffield during 2010-11.  In 2011 we were funded by Humber Learning Consortium to run a communications course and we developed this idea into “IT Club”, a weekly drop-in throughout the winter months that provides a hot lunch and free internet access, as well as  ESOL, literacy and paired reading and support with forms, letters etc

RASAG is a constituted community group with a large active membership and several dedicated volunteers.  IT Club relaunched November 5th 2012 for winter as a drop-in 11-3 pm on Mondays at Learn for Life.  Members use the internet with help from our volunteers if needed.  We identify their language and literacy level and sign post them to available classes as well as providing access tpo a wide range of resourses and 1:1 or small group help where possible.  Members can bring along any documents or forms they are having difficulty with and with provide printing and copying where needed.  Members can also get help with their own devices at the drop-in.  There is a shared hot lunch and a multi level ESOL class (if required) during the drop-in.  We securely monitor the data of our clients and their needs.
